On March 8, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared from the radar system, leaving behind a trail of mystery and intrigue. After many search efforts, the plane's last location remains unknown, leaving many theories and speculations behind it.
The Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), whose task is to transmit data about the performance of aircraft, sent its last transmission at 1:07 AM and then was subsequently switched off.
At 12:41 a.m. local time, Boeing 777-200ER flight MH370 took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport for Beijing, China. There were 239 people on board, including crew members and passengers. In flight MH370, there were almost 150 passengers from China, 38 from Malaysia, 7 from Indonesia and 6 passengers from Australia. A couple of passengers were from France and United States.
It took around 52 days to complete the first phase of the search for Flight MH370, which involved 334 search flights, covered 1.7 million square miles, and was mostly carried out from the air.
In January 2017, the governments of Australia, Malaysia and China officially called off the search operation for the flight after covering 46,000 square miles of the Indian Sea floor. That operation cost $150 million.
After that, an American company, Ocean Infinity got a special permission from the Government of Malaysia to continue the search operation until May, 2017.
