Her parents, Deepak and Bonnie Pandya instilled in her a deep appreciation for education and hard work. Sunita's parents were of Indian origin but she bor and brought up in America.
Sunita Williams graduated from Needham High School in Massachusetts in the year 1983. She then pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science from the United States Naval Academy and graduated in 1987. After her graduation, she earned a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.

Her first spaceflight was on the STS-116 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in December 2006. During this mission, she performed four spacewalks, contributing to the construction of the International Space Station (ISS). In July 2012, Sunita launched again to the ISS as part of Expedition 32/33. She served as a Flight Engineer for Expedition 32 and took command of Expedition 33, becoming one of the few women to command the ISS.
