The story of IIT Village of Bihar

Over 40 students from Bihar's Patwa Toli have cleared JEE Main 2025, with many trained at a free coaching centre run by former IITians. The village, known as the 'IIT factory', continues its streak of academic success.

Academic Triumph from a Weaving Hub

Patwa Toli, a small locality in Bihar’s Gaya district famously known as the ā€˜IIT village’, has once again lived up to its reputation with more than 40 students clearing the JEE Main 2025 exam. The results, declared on April 19, have sparked celebrations in the community known for transforming its identity from a weaving hub to an academic powerhouse.

Among the successful candidates, 28 students received their training from Vriksha Sansthan, a free coaching centre founded by former IITians from the village. The centre provides guidance, study material, and mentorship to students from financially weaker backgrounds, especially children of local weavers.

Top Performers Shine

Sharanya emerged as one of the top scorers with a remarkable 99.64 percentile, while others like Alok (97.7), Shaurya (97.53), Yash Raj (97.38), Shubham (96.7), Pratik (96.55), and Ketan (96) also secured impressive scores.

Transformation of a Village

Located on the outskirts of Gaya city, Patwa Toli is home to around 20,000 people, most of whom are involved in the weaving industry. However, over the past two decades, the village has gained national attention for producing 15-20 IITians almost every year. This remarkable shift began in 1991 when Jitendra Patwa became the first from the area to secure admission to an IIT, inspiring generations to follow in his footsteps.

A group of IIT alumni from the village established the Vriksha Foundation to help aspiring engineers prepare for competitive exams like JEE.

Vriksha Sansthan’s Impact

Of the 40 successful candidates, 28 students were mentored by Vriksha Sansthan, a free coaching initiative run by IIT alumni. Founded in 2013, the Sansthan provides study materials and online classes conducted by IIT graduates living in metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai. This initiative primarily supports children from underprivileged backgrounds, especially weaver families.

The village’s academic journey began in 1991 when Jitendra Patwa became the first person from Patwa Toli to enter IIT. Now based in the US, he supports the cause through his NGO 'Vriksh We The Change'.

The NGO now plays a key role in identifying talent, offering free coaching, and connecting students with expert teachers across India through online classes. With the JEE Advanced scheduled for May 18, the students of Patwa Toli are now aiming for the next big milestone.

Despite its economic challenges, Patwa Toli continues to set a national example of how grassroots efforts, community support, and access to quality education can drive remarkable success.
