Do you know these Astronauts?

Human Spaceflight records are extensive and saw a lot of competition to establish their own mark in space race. Let's look at the some of great astronauts and their remarkable achievement:

Valentina Tereshkova

The first woman in space was Soviet Valentina Tereshkova. She was launched on 16th June 1963, aboard Vostok 6 and orbited Earth for almost 3 days.

Alan Shepard

He was the first American and second person in space. He was launched on 5th May 1961, on a 15-minute sub-orbital flight.

Alexei Leonov

He was the first person to conduct an extravehicular activity on 18th March 1965, on the Soviet Union's Voskhod 2 mission.

Sally Ride

She was the first American woman in space during the Space Shuttle Challenger's mission STS-7 on 18th June 1983.

Pham Tuan

He was the first Asian (Vietnam) in space, aboard Soyuz 37 on 23rd July 1980.

Neil Armstrong

He was the first human to walk on the moon in the year 1969.

Buzz Aldrin

He was the second human to walk on the moon in 1969.

Yang Liwei

He was the first person sent into space by China.

Dennis Tito

He was the first self-funded space tourist on board the Russian spacecraft Soyuz TM-3 on 28th April 2001.

Yuri Gagarin

On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin made history aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft, becoming the first human to orbit the Earth. The mission lasted 108 minutes, during which Gagarin orbited the planet once at a maximum altitude of 327 kilometers (203 miles).

Rakesh Sharma

Rakesh Sharma holds the distinction of being the first Indian citizen to travel to space. He was a pilot in the Indian Air Force before being selected for a joint Soviet-Indian space mission. On April 2, 1984, he launched aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft and spent eight days aboard the Salyut 7 space station.

Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian origin to go to space. She flew on two Space Shuttle missions: STS-87 in 1997 and STS-107 in 2003. Tragically, Chawla and her six crewmates perished when the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry on February 1, 2003. Chawla's contributions to space science and her legacy continue to inspire aspiring astronauts and engineers worldwide.

Sunita Williams

Sunita Williams, an American astronaut of Indian descent, has made significant contributions to space exploration. She was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1998 and has spent a total of 322 days in space, making her one of the most experienced astronauts.
