The Olympic Games were started in ancient Greece 3,000 years ago. And now it is one of the most famous sporting competitions in the world.
Between the 8th century B.C. and the 4th century A.D., the Olympic Games were held every 4 years in Olympia. It was held in the honor of the god Zeus.
The ancient Olympic games started in 776 BC and were held in Olympia, Greece.
Games such as foot races, discus throwing, jumping, javelin throwing and wrestling were part of the ancient Olympic Games and are still part of the modern Olympics. In ancient Olympics, there were no Gold, Silver or Bronze medals like modern Olympic Games. At that time, there was one single winner. The Emperor Theodosius banned the Olympic Games in 393 AD because the emperor banned all festivals which favoured Christianity.
The first modern Olympics was held in the year 1896 in Athens, in that event it featured 280 participants from 12 nations across the world. Since the year 1994, the Olympic Games have been held separately for summer and winter and have alternated every two years. In 2024, Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, France from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
The initial Olympics were held every 4 years from August 6 to September 19 as a religious festival honouring Zeus. It was named the Olympics because it was held in Olympia. Olympia is a sacred place located near the western coast of the Peloponnese Peninsula in southern Greece. A cook named Coroebus won the event of 192-meter footrace and became the first Olympic champion.
There were no womenâs events in the ancient Olympics. It took a long time since the Paris 1900 Olympic Games and finally, the first female athlete participated in 5 events which were - tennis, croquet, sailing, equestrian and golf. There were only 22 women who participated in the Olympics, which was only 2 per cent of the total competitors. After almost 100 years the first women participated in the Olympic Games, and the number of female athletes was almost equal to the men participants at Tokyo 2020. It is 50 per cent women and 50 per cent men in the Olympics Game 2024.
